About Heather     Genealogical Compendium     FH4U

I have been following my hobby of genealogy for more years than I care to remember, collecting information on both my side of the family and that of my husband Geoff. When time has allowed I have been known to give the odd talk on subjects related to family history. I have been involved in numerous projects including writing articles for family history magazines, archiving local history pictures and picture postcards in and around North East Hampshire, England, amongst other things.

During this time I have collected lots of information from various sources. With my interests specialising in the following areas, North Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, Lancashire, parts of Devon and Somerset and New South Wales, Australia, and for the last fifteen plus years adoption.

In the meantime my paternal families originate and have stayed within a fifteen-mile radius of our home for over 300 years. My grandfather Harold Victor Stevens co owned Stevens Bros. garage in Fleet High Street, Hampshire until it was sold and pulled down at the end of the 1960’s. He was married to Margery Gwendolen Neé Harden being one of five daughters of Percy Harden who owned the butchers shop also in Fleet High Street.

Geoff’s families are mainly from Lancashire, unlike my own family they travelled around Manchester and the surrounding areas, with larger groups in Salford, Bolton and Turton.

Other surnames of interest
Devon - Boyce, Dunsford
Hampshire - Grinham, Crumplin, Stevens
Lancashire - Boyce, Hicks, Mayoh, Wolstencroft
Surrey - Williams
Sussex - Harden, Mitten, Ballard, Sheather
Warwickshire - Hemming
Australia - New South Wales -Sheather

Genealogical Compendium
Whilst volunteering as the National Subject adviser to all the U3A family history and Genealogy groups in the UK, I put together 'Genealogical Compendium'. Initially I started putting the data together as reference guides to help members of the family history groups I was leading at the time. I found I had more information than I first thought, hence I decided to put it onto a cd.

There are 11 sections:-

'First there are what are effectively aides aimed to point you in the right direction'.
Start Tracing your Family History
1911 Census Code
Problems in Census
Useful.

Between these sections they cover 84 A4 pages.
The other sections
'Websites for Family Historians' this is my collection of 118 A4 pages of websites that I have found helpful.

The remaining sections can all be described as working in a similar fashion to a dictionary,
Abbreviations, Acronyms & Short Forms
Medical
Occupations
Terminology
Units and Rank of the Roman Army
Unlock Your Latin

These sections collectively total over 1200 pages.

Genealogical Compendium is no longer supported, as I haven't had the time too update it, but if you believe something may be helpful to you, I am prepared to consider a special release. My contact details are hh.in.hants@roccoland.plus.com or phone 07788941246.

At the time of updating this website a few copies of the existing version are still available at a small cost to cover expenses.

I am no longer a member of U3A nor do I have any connection to it.
